Reviews to Help You Narrow Your Choice

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

For those who don’t know, Matt and I live in Maryland and we are currently experiencing a record snowfall of 10-20 inches on top of another 30. Needless to say we are not going outside in this blizzard and hence why we have been so busy making updates. I decided to sit down and workout incorporating Yelp reviews for each restaurant. I personally am a huge fan of the site and I think that was one thing we have been missing.

Well not anymore! Yelp reviews for most, if not all the restaurants have been added to each restaurant page on top of the photos and videos. I have been clicking through places around our area and I am pleased to see some good ratings. Now if only this snow would melt so I could go get some of that tasty food.

Happy searching!

Site Updates

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

We’ve updated the data and have pretty much caught up on “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” , “Throwdown with Bobby Flay“, and “The Best Thing I Ever Ate“.  Updates for the other shows are coming soon.

We are also aware that the new “roll up” feature of the map may cause some issues with the advanced search capabilities (showing you more than you should see based on the filters you have selected) and are working on ironing those out.

Videos and Photos Added for Restaurants

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Some of you may have noticed that you can click on a restaurant name and it will take you to a page giving you more information on the place. Up until yesterday you would really only see information that was already presented to you and a few other “coming soon” features. I would like to let everyone know that videos and photos have been added for most of the restaurants. Now when you visit a detailed restaurant information page you can check out the segment of the show it was featured on and some photos that people from all over the world have uploaded. I personally have already found both of the features extremely useful as it makes the restaurant more than just text on the page. Please let us know what you think and how we can improve.

Improved Site Performance

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Some of you may have noticed that the map no longer contains a rainbow of markers when first going to the website or making a search. Instead you see these orange circles with numbers in them. What is this you ask? Those orange circles are roll ups of the markers in that area. The number in the middle of the circle is the number of markers rolled up into that one circle. Clicking the circle will allow you to dive in further into the map and see more markers.

Implementing this feature saves us a lot of time loading all the markers because we no longer need to show all 700-1000 of them at once. Instead we can show high level views. Not only does this feature save on load, but it helps to improve searching. Now when you search for a specific area, you can zoom out and begin to see all the other places around the area. If you are planning a trip then this is certainly helpful. We hope you enjoy the feature and the new performance of the site as it is certainly faster. Expect some more changes soon!

Famous Food Finder Google Chrome Extension

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Lately I have been trying to think of ways to make Famous Food Finder more into a service that anyone can easily use and offer on their website. So far this has brought me to the beginning of creating several widget-like versions of Famous Food Finder. Development has already began on a Drupal module and a WordPress module will soon follow after that. Tonight I had some spare time and wanted to see how Google Chrome Extensions were made, so I went through and created one. For those who are interested, you can download the Famous Food Finder Chrome Extension here. It offers limited functionality, but still gets the job done for someone on the go.
